Seating area with an oak console table and two table lamps, villa near Knokke

Villa near Knokke

Bringing everything into harmony and carrying out the details that matter with care: that was the brief. Over the years this villa had been furnished with an assortment of furniture, rugs and objects gathered along the way.

The parquet floor was dark and needed refreshing.

The house

From our collection Our full collection
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-7-1024x683
The house works with three tones. The walls are taupe above the wainscoting and white below, the floor is pale oak, and against them the upholstery in grey linen. The oval table on a white pedestal and the chandelier with glass branches are the two pieces that set the tone.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-1-1024x683
The glazed display cabinet is in the same white as the wainscoting.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-2-1024x683
Behind the sofa a long console runs along the wall, with two lamps under the same shade.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-3-1024x683
The natural stone fireplace sits in a wall finished entirely in panelling.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-4-1024x683
Seen from the dining end, the fireplace and seating area line up with each other.

The dining room

The curtains had been replaced at some point, but without any thought for the whole. The chandelier above the dining area is now centred exactly on the table and the double door. The living room has gained a flowing perspective. The coffee table has a top in solid elm. The small side tables slide freely under the large central table: not only does that look tidy and handsome, it is also very practical.

Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-5-1024x683
The dining room looks out over its full width. The table therefore does not stand against a wall but on the axis of the windows, with the chandelier above as the only weight. The curtains fall from cornice to floor and keep the light soft.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-6-1024x683
In the seating area two low side tables stand before the fireplace, keeping the way to the garden clear.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-8-1024x683
The panelled run of cupboards carries on up to the fireplace and hides the storage.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-10-1024x683
In the evening the fireplace with the screen above it is the only point of light in the room.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-11-682x1024
The Persian rug under the table brings the only colour into an otherwise grey room.

From hall to dining room

For the colour scheme the choice fell on taupe, broken by light whites.

Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-9-682x1024
Between the hall and the dining room stands a glazed double door. It keeps the rooms apart without holding back the light: from the hallway you look right through to the window.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-12-1024x683
The round table in the bay seats six, with the painting as a backdrop.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-18-1024x683
In the seating area the armchairs stand with their backs to the window, facing the fireplace.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-14-1024x683
The staircase in pale oak has a white balustrade, in the same tone as the panelling.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-15-1024x683
Every window was given a roman blind in the same fabric, with a dark handle as the only accent.

Views through the house

Marcotte Style set out to bring every volume, colour and perspective into harmony. The terracotta lamps were tuned to the whole as well. All these details find their balance with the incoming light and the shadows it casts. They are the points we always take into account. Marcotte Style can draw on a great deal of experience with this kind of complete project: with the right advice and knowledge, a full project always ends in a flawless execution of the drawings.

Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-20-1024x683
The living space runs from the fireplace to the garden doors. What holds the room together is the panelled radiator casing: it runs under every window and makes the heating part of the wall.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-26-1024x683
From the hallway the view runs past the buttoned chair back into the dining room.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-17-1024x683
The door holds mirror instead of clear glass, which makes the room look twice as deep.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-24-1024x683
In the evening the chandelier hangs low over the table and the rest of the room stays dark.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-19-1024x683
The garden doors sit between two lengths of curtain, with the fireplace beside them.

The study

The study was given only new curtains; the old cabinet and desk were sandblasted and then oiled white. For optimal protection the wood then receives two coats of matt varnish.

Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-35-1024x683
The study lies behind the hall, with the staircase between. Through the glazed door the work space stays connected to the rest of the house without being part of it.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-25-1024x748
The desk in pale oak stands free in the room, with the bookcase filling the wall behind it.

The kitchen

Along the long wall around the open fire, a perfectly proportioned white timber cabinet was made. In the middle, above the fire, the television is concealed. The curtains, in a very soft and noble fabric, come as a surprise: their colours return in full in the walls and the white cabinets. That creates continuity, and curtains and walls become one.

Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-29-1024x683
The kitchen is carried out in the same white as the panelling in the living space, with a tiled wall in earth tones as the only departure. The island carries a top in pale stone and serves as both bar and work surface.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-27-1024x683
At the island stand two bar chairs in the same fabric as in the dining room.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-34-1024x683
The hob sits in the island, with the extractor above it tucked into the wall unit.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-33-1024x683
Seen from the garden door, the worktop runs the full length of the wall.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-31-1024x683
The kitchen is set out in an L, with the sink under the window and the island in the middle.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-32-1024x683
Above the sink sits a window across the full width, with the same striped roman blinds.

The bedroom

A modest intervention turned a rather sombre bedroom into a tasteful whole with considered finesse. Taupe, grey and beige tones dominate the bedspread, the curtains and the walls without ever imposing. The ensemble feels remarkably calm.

Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-36-1024x683
The bedroom lies under the roof. The sloping wall was kept white and the cupboard is built beneath it, so the low side stays usable instead of being lost.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-37-1024x683
On either side of the bed stands a table lamp with the same shade, on a built-in bedside unit.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-38-1024x683
Under the window the radiator casing carries on into the run of cupboards.

The bathroom

A completely different layout suddenly made the small bathroom feel larger. The effect comes from placing the large walk-in shower centrally and setting the two basins against the shower's low wall. That frees up room for bespoke low units along the long wall. The radiator now disappears neatly between two of those units and forms one whole with them.

From our collection Bathroom cabinets
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-40-1024x683
The bathroom works with two materials: a top in dark stone with two basins set on it, and below it a unit in the same white as the rest of the house. The mirror cabinets hang free on the wall, with the lighting built into them.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-39-682x1024
A strip of pebble mosaic marks the wet zone in the floor.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-44-682x1024
The window was given a white roman blind, so the light can be softened without curtains.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-42-1024x683
Under the slope a run of cupboards with beaded doors carries on to the radiator casing.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-41-1024x683
Against the basin wall stands timber slatting, the only dark surface in the room.
Marcottestyle-knokke-stijl-villa-43-1024x683
The walk-in shower lies behind the basin, tiled in the same pale stone as the floor.

At a glance

To get a sense of the metamorphosis, the before and after image is worth a look.

Four views side by side: the seating area and the dining room from a different corner each time.
