Moderne badkamer op maat in Gent met een wastafelblok in gevlekt marmer, een zwevend meubel in donker hout en een verlichte ronde spiegel

Modern bathroom, Ghent

In this house in Ghent we designed a bathroom in which two materials do all the work: a strongly veined marble and a dark stained wood.

The washbasin block stands free in the room and is clad in the same stone on every side. Beside it hangs a handleless cabinet in dark wood, with a shadow gap under the top. The marble wall behind the toilet runs from the floor right up to the ceiling.

The style is modern, but the room sits in a classical frame: white panelled walls, a cornice and a window in dark wood. We draw and design, the bespoke work is made for you in Europe, directly and without middlemen, and our own team installs it. Curious how that works? Read how we proceed.

  • Place: Ghent
  • Room: Bathroom with toilet
  • Bespoke: Marble washbasin block, floating cabinet, marble wall cladding
  • Materials: Veined marble, dark stained wood, brushed steel
  • Execution: Design, bespoke work and installation

The bathroom

The room is narrow and tall, so there is only one heavy volume in it: the washbasin block, free in the room, with the passage to the toilet alongside. Everything that meets the walls is suspended.

The cabinet under the window floats above the floor and the mirror touches the wall only with its back. That keeps the pale floor visible from wall to wall and makes the room look wider than it is. We take the same approach on every bespoke bathroom: the layout first, the materials after.

Two materials carry the whole room. The veined marble covers the wall behind the toilet and the washbasin block, and against it stands dark stained wood in the floating cabinet. The wall panelling and the cornice stay white, so the classical frame does not compete with the stone.

The marble wall behind the toilet runs from the floor to the ceiling, in the same stone as the washbasin block. That makes the wet side of the room read as one whole, while the rest stays white and quiet.

The round mirror slides across the marble wall, with a line of light behind its edge that washes the stone.

The marble washbasin block

The washbasin block is clad in the same stone on every side, with the veining running on across the corners. The basin sits flush in the top, without a raised rim.

The tap is in brushed steel, with cross handles. That same brushed steel returns on the flush plate of the toilet. There is no second metal colour in the room.

The stone runs on across the corner, so the block reads as a block and not as a top on a cabinet. Beside it the top of the floating cabinet in dark wood sits at exactly the same height, which turns the two volumes into one continuous line.

One stone, one wood, one metal. A bathroom needs no more than that.

The floating cabinet

Under the window hangs a handleless cabinet in dark stained wood. It opens on push, with the shadow gap under the top as the only visible line.

The smaller moves finish the room: the flush plate sits flush in the marble wall and the light behind the mirror runs on until it meets the stone. Those are exactly the places where a bathroom otherwise looks unfinished. We use the same principle for bespoke cupboards in the rest of the house.

The cabinet is handleless and hangs clear of the floor. The only line is the shadow gap under the top, which runs on until it meets the wall, so the volume does not fall apart into separate doors.

Materials that belong together

Three materials, and nothing further. That is the whole idea behind this bathroom.

The first is the stone. The same strongly veined marble covers the wall behind the toilet, from the floor to the ceiling, and the washbasin block. Because the veining runs on across the corners, it stays a volume instead of a cabinet with a top on it.

The second is dark stained wood. It appears only in the floating cabinet, with a top at the same height as the washbasin top. Dark wood against pale stone keeps a spare room warm, without a colour being added.

The third is brushed steel, and it stays limited to two pieces: the tap and the flush plate. All the rest is white, from the wall panelling to the floor. Would you like the same in your home? Our interior designer in Ghent will come to you.
